This is the Nicomekl Nature Kids group and we explore nature along the Nicomekl River. Nature Kids BC organizes activities for local families to get outside, explore nature, and get to know the plants and animals in the wild places around them. Today we're doing a pond-dipping activity in the existing ponds at the future Nicomekl Riverfront Park. Local kids, families, and nature mentors will discover who lives beneath the surface of the ponds. These ponds connect to the Nicomekl River via Elgin Creek. Larry Ramsell and a community group called RESCUE created and used these ponds to rear salmon. There are many plants growing in and around these ponds. Like these ponds, the future Nicomekl Riverfront Park, stretching from Elgin Road to 40th Avenue, is rich in biodiversity. There are many species living and thriving in these ponds: small fish, tadpoles, ducks, worms, diving beetles. These species deserve a home so it's important to balance the preservation of this sensitive environment with allowing people to explore nature in the park. We encourage you to get to know nature in your community by participating in local nature activities and sharing your vision for the future Nicomekl Riverfront Park.
