Why are the new courts going to be in a stormwater detention pond?

Tennis courts are built in hubs – the only way to expand the existing tennis court hub was to expand south into the dry detention pond.

What will happen to the courts during a significant rain event?

While significant rain events are rare, they happen. The detention pond functions of the site will remain unchanged, meaning during these rain events, flooding of the courts may happen. Luckily, these rain events often coincide with times of decreased tennis demand.

Will the new tennis courts be multi-purpose to allow pickleball as well?

No – the new tennis courts are going to be dedicated tennis courts to prevent user conflicts, consistent with recommendations from the Outdoor Sport Court Strategy.

Will the new tennis courts have lighting?

Yes – we are planning to expand current lighting to the new courts.

Will the existing tennis courts at Newton Athletic Park be changed or updated?

No - the project is to expand the current tennis court hub by adding additional courts to the south. No changes are proposed to the existing courts.

Will the existing tennis courts be open during construction?

Yes - the existing courts will remain open.

Will the new tennis courts affect the parking lot?

No changes are proposed to the parking lot.

When will the tennis court expansion be completed?

The target timeline for completion is Summer/Fall 2027.

Will trees be removed for this project?

While plans and construction drawings for the project have not yet been developed, some small trees around the detention pond may need to be removed to accommodate the new tennis courts.
