Do you have a question or comments about the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre Expansion project? We would be happy to respond to your question and will get back to you as soon as we can.

  • Will you be having a clay and pottery room

Nadine asked about 2 years ago

At present, the expansion does not include a clay and pottery space. We encourage nearby residents to visit the Surrey Arts Centre at King George and 88 Ave., where we offer comprehensive and robust pottery programming services.

  • We need free meeting rooms for twelve step fellowships like NA or AA.

Daniel asked about 2 years ago

Thank you for your feedback. Your request has been noted. At this time, we abide by our fees and charges guidelines for rentals.

  • The skatepark is a really awesome part of the facility - I really hope it will be kept as-is or expanded/improved. When Guildford Rec Centre was redeveloped, the previous skatepark was replaced with a much smaller one. I would hate to see that also happen at Chuck Bailey. As population density around City Centre is increasing, skateboarding is an accessible fitness & creative activity, and can be done solo or with friends. There is a good community of skaters here.

Jodi M. asked about 2 years ago

Thank you for your positive feedback on the current skatepark and the community.  The current skatepark will not be affected by the expansion and will remain intact.

  • How are you planning to address the homeless and drug users around this facility?

giselia asked about 2 years ago

We are committed to building a facility that is safe, inclusive and accessible for people of all ages and abilities. The expansion will utilize Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles to reduce crime and fear of crime. Some key strategies include using windows to provide natural surveillance of surrounding park areas, extending community centre activities outdoors to promote a feeling of safety when you are on the site, providing uniform lighting around the building to improve visibility at night and discourage illegal and anti-social behaviours, and providing security cameras and access control.

  • Indoor walking track would be great as we then don’t have to go to Guilford Recreation Center during fall/winter season to walk pluses walk can be done at any age and great health activities With more people moving in to the area the Guilford Recreation Center has become more busy. Could also cut down on car traffic going to Guilford.

Kimberly Fox asked about 2 years ago

An indoor walking track is not included in the scope of this project. The expansion will include new outdoor walking paths around the building and through the site.

  • How big is the expansion? Will it just be contained within the lot, or will we adjacent lots be committed to the expansion?

Ryan asked about 2 years ago

The expansion will include a second gymnasium, multipurpose rooms, a maker space, a teaching kitchen, fitness centre and a fitness studio. It will be constructed immediately adjacent the existing building on the same lot.

  • Will the new redesign include more CCTV cameras so that drug users from 135A Street don’t congregate here?

Aaron B asked about 2 years ago

CCTV cameras will be included in the expansion.

  • Why is the lot across the street from Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre NOT a part of the expansion plan? It would make perfect sense for the expansion and leave the current parking lot intact!!

Lynda asked over 2 years ago

Thank you for your input. This expansion is an addition to the existing Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre and will be physically connected to the existing building on the same lot. The expansion will provide a new below-grade parking that will support the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre facility.

  • Will the community garden be available during the time of construction? I’d still like to have my salad garden! Esp with the current high cost of fresh vegetables.

Marilyn asked over 2 years ago

The community garden’s current location is within the proposed expansion footprint, which means the current garden will be decommissioned during construction. The expansion will include a new community garden and pollinator garden.

  • The skatepark is a jewel of the area. It brings people into an area that would otherwise be avoided. I've had several meals in the area because of it. It's not quite covered enough to keep the bowl from staying dry in the winter which would have attracted even more people as it's the only covered bowl in the LMD. The covering has also done wonders preserving the surface. Any covered skateboard area in the new plan would be greatly appreciated especially if it afforded a dry area when any wind is present.

Raul asked over 2 years ago

Thank you for your input. The current expansion does not include expansion to the skatepark canopy but will include generous covered outdoor areas adjacent the entry plaza and social heart courtyard.
