FAQs
What is an outdoor sport court?
An outdoor sport court is an outdoor activity space or amenity, usually paved, that accommodates a variety of sports and activities. These courts accommodate activities such as basketball, tennis, pickleball, volleyball, lacrosse, and ball hockey.
Are new sport courts going to be built as part of this project?
That’s one of the things that will be determined through the Strategy. The Strategy will provide the City with a long term (15 year) plan that will identify what the need is for outdoor sport courts, locations for potential new development, possible improvements to existing courts, and other elements needed to effectively manage these important sport and recreation spaces.
Where are outdoor sport courts going to be built?
Through the development of the Strategy, the City will determine where new sport courts are needed throughout the community and identify parks where new sport courts could be built.
Is this about closing some sport courts?
No, it isn’t. The Outdoor Sport Court Strategy is about effectively planning for the future provision of outdoor sport courts. The City wants to be proactive and to ensure we are growing our amenities alongside the growth of our population and sport court users.
How many outdoor sport courts are in Surrey?
There are over 160 outdoor sport courts in Surrey. They are located across Surrey. Some are single courts while others are clustered in groups.
Can I book an outdoor sport court?
Sport courts are available on a first come, first serve basis; drop-in games are limited to 30 minutes when others are waiting. All organized court use, including clubs, lessons, or reserved game time require permits. To book a court, please email bookafield@surrey.ca.
Does this mean that some other sport and recreation projects may be stopped?
The development of the Outdoor Sport Court Strategy will not impact any projects that are underway or approved by the City. Some sport court projects will be identified through the Strategy. Those sport court projects will be considered along with other park projects that are being considered and the City will determine the priorities from all potential projects.
When will the Strategy be completed?
The Strategy is expected to be completed late in 2023.
What opportunities will the public have to provide input into the Strategy’s development?
Input from the public is an important element to the development of the Outdoor Sport Court Strategy. Initial input will be gathered from residents and groups in the April and May 2023. This input will be used to help draft the Strategy.
